Pilvilajit - Cloud Types: Etelä-Suomen ylle jääneen rintamasysteemin pilvisyyttä (vaihtelevasti mm. verho-, hahtuva- ja kumpukerrospilviä) piilossa kuvassa näkyvän yhtenäisen sumupilvikerroksen yllä. Sumupilvet liikkuivat hitaasti vasemmalta oikealle - Over the even layer of stratus clouds seen in the photo a hiding cloudyness (variably for example altostratus, altocumulus and stratocumulus clouds) of a frontal system stucked over southern Finland. The stratus clouds moved slowly from the left to the right.

The record big value of the effective temperature sum was showing at this phase mainly as unusually well developed growth of single foreign species; for example well woody shoots, like in the case of Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), Elderberry's (Sambucus nigra) berries shed even as over ripe and flower heads of Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata "Grandiflora") turned especially red (there where the frosts of the middle month weren't causing damages to them).

The zone separated a northerly cold and autumnal air mass and a humid and summery air mass from each other; on the observation post this was showing as all the time cloudy weather, but there came rain very little mainly as drizzle. The southerly air mass affected occasionally as dense fogs (especially at night and in the morning of this day), because winds were all the time very weak. Temperatures remained very high especially at nights (partly a fault of the dense cloudyness), allthough the cold air mass in the north was near.

Vähäisiä sateita syksyisen ilman hivuttautuessa etelään - Light rains as an autumnal air was creeping southwards

Pilvilajit - Cloud Types: Yhtenäistä sumupilvilauttaa, joka liikkui hitaasti takaoikealta etuvasemmalle. Pilvilautan yllä oli vaihtelevasti pohjoisesta lähestyneen kylmän rintaman pilviä; mm. untuva-, verho- ja hahtuvapilviä. Lännestä saapunut ilmamassa oli aikaisempaa kuivempaa; ei enää utua - An even layer of stratus clouds, which moved slowly from the right backside to the left foreside. Above the cloud layer there were clouds of a cold front approached from the north; for example cirrus, altostratus and altocumulus clouds. The air mass arrived from the west was drier than before; no haze anymore.

Rintama liittyi pieneen matalapaineeseen, joka ylitti Suomen itään päivän aikana. Samalla Suomen länsipuolella rintamaan oli muodostumassa uusi pieni matalapaine, joka liikkui myös itään; rintama säilyi aaltoilevana eteläisen Suomen päällä - In the evening the mentioned cold front brought occasional light rain and drizzle. The front associated with a small low pressure, which crossed Finland to the east during the day. At the same time in the western side of Finland there was forming a new small low pressure to the front. That as well was moving to the east; the front remained undulating over southern Finland.

Sumupilvet syksyn merkkinä jälkikesän vallitessa - Stratus clouds as a sign of autumn in the prevailing after summer

Pilvilajit - Cloud Types: Kostean ja ajankohtaan nähden lämpimän keskileveysasteiden ilmamassan yhtenäisiä sumupilviä ja utua. Yöllä ja aamulla oli myös sumua ja tihkusadetta. Pilvet liikkuivat kohtalaisesti oikealta vasemmalle - An even layer of stratus clouds associating with a humid and unseasonally warm middle latitude air mass. There was fog and drizzle as well at night and in the morning. The clouds moved moderately from the right to the left.

Vähentynyt auringon säteily mahdollisti sumupilvien esiintymisen jo myös iltapäivällä. The decreased sun radiation made possible the stratus clouds to appear allready during the afternoon as well. Therefore night temperatures were especially high for the season, but afternoon temperatures remained short of top readings, if the stratus clouds remained thickly in the sky for all day; in the weather station in question the cloudyness broke so much, that +18 C was reached.

Uuden lämpimän ja kostean ilma-annoksen tullessa - As a new portion of warm and humid air arrives

Pilvilajit - Cloud Types: Tilanteessa oli tilapäisesti lähes selkeää (paikoin untuvapilviä) korkeapaineen siirryttyä idemmäksi ja lounaassa olleen lämpimän rintaman siirryttyä eteläisen Suomen yli koilliseen. Illalla lämpimämmän ja kostean keskileveysasteiden ilmamassan vaikuttaessa yhä enemmän paikalle saapui sumupilvisyyttä - In the situation it was temporarily allmost clear (locally cirrus clouds) as the high pressure was moved more eastwards and the warm front in the southwest was moved to the northeast across southern Finland. In the evening as the warmer and humid middle latitude air mass was influencing further more there arrived stratus clouds into the scene.

Lämpimän sään ja kuivuuden jälkeen muodostuneen kosteuden vaikutus näkyi edelleen jopa n. 2 viikkoa myöhässä ilmaantuvina syysväreinä. Lähes täysin kesäasussa olivat edelleen mm. tammi (Quercus robur) ja lehmukset (Tilia sp.). Pimentyneet yöt mahdollistivat heikkotuulisessa säässä runsaan kasteen ja heikentynyt auringon säteily ei kuivattanut enää voimakkaasti maata. Maaperä oli kuivuuden jälkeen kuitenkin vielä tavanomaista kuivempi ja vesistöissä veden pinnat olivat alle tavanomaisen tason - Allmost unchanged as compared to the previous photo. The influence of the warm weather and the moisture formed after the drought were showing further as even about 2 week delay of the fall colours. Allmost completely in their summer foliage were further for example English Oak (Quercus robur) and Lindens / Limes (Tilia sp.). The darkened nights made a profuse dew possible in the weakly windy weather and the decreased sun radiation power didn't dry up the ground effectively anymore. However the ground was yet drier than usually after the drought and water levels in water areas were lower than the average.

Viileneminen rintamapilvisyyden alla - A cooling under a frontal cloudyness

Pilvilajit - Cloud Types: Suomen lounaiskulmaa hipovan rintamavyöhykkeen verho- ja harsopilviä. Havaintopaikka oli niukasti rintaman kylmemmällä puolella, jolloin rintaman lämpimän puolen ilmamassan utua ei ollut. Pilvet liikkuivat hitaasti takaa eteen rintamalinjaa pitkin - Altostratus and cirrostratus clouds of the frontal zone touching the southwestern corner of Finland. The observation scene was narrowly on the colder side of the front, where there wasn't haze of the warmer side's air mass. The clouds moved slowly from the back to the front along the frontal line.

At this phase a part of the species forming fall colours the first were peacking their fall colours in the region; like Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) and Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica). As a whole a summery tone was yet in the majority on the landscape.

At the same time the high pressure in the southern side of Finland weakened. Therefore a cold front arrived from the north, but now its advancing stopped on the mentioned place. The frontal cloudyness remained over southern Finland as preventing night temperatures from dropping much low; there wasn't formed a risk of ground frost during the following night despite the cool polaric air mass.

Ne liikkuivat kohtalaisesti oikealta vasemmalle. Utu samensi päivällä taivaan sinisyyttä ja aamulla oli etenkin sisämaassa sumuja - yhtenäistä sumupilvilauttaa - Otherwise clear, but associating with the humid, marine and very warm middle latitude air mass occasional stratus clouds. They moved moderately from the right to the left. Haze blurred the blueness of the sky in the afternoon and in the morning there was fog and even layers of stratus clouds especially in inland areas.

Despite the very summery weather the proceeding of autumn was appearing in a way in addition to the darkening nights as decreasing of the sun's radiation power; that caused for example the fact, that stratus clouds weren't able to evaporate completely even during afternoon and convective cumulus clouds weren't formed well anymore.

Usva oli hitaassa liikkeessä oikealta vasemmalle lähes tyynessä säässä - Otherwise clear, but morning fog - mist associating with a humid and very warm middle latitude air mass. The mist was on a slow move from the right to the left in an allmost calm weather.

There was no risk of ground frost either.

Huomioita säätilanteesta - Notes about the weather condition: Edelliseksi päiväksi lounaasta asettui korkeapaine Suomen eteläpuolelle ja tällöin Britannian länsipuolella olleen voimakkaan matalapaineen avulla korkeapaineen länsipuolitse lännestä - lounaasta alkoi kiertymään eteläiseen Suomeen ajankohtaan nähden erittäin lämmintä ja merellistä ilmaa. Ilmavirtauksen yhteydessä oli vain ajoittain vähän untuva - harsopilviä sekä aamuisin sumuja - sumupilviä (vahvimmin sisämaassa). Kuun 20. - 22. päivinä Pohjois-Lapissa satoi jopa lunta. Pilvilajit - Cloud Types: Paikan alkupäivästä ylittäneen kylmän rintaman takaosan nopeahkosti etääntyvää untuva- ja harsopilvivyöhykettä rintaman suuntaisina nauhoina. Paikalle saapuneessa lämpimähkössä ja kuivassa polaari-ilmamassassa ei ollut enää utua. Kuvaajan takana oli saapumassa ilmamassalle tyypillisiä kumpupilviä - A rather fast retreating cirrus and cirrostratus clouds zone as stripes along the backside of the cold front, which crossed the scene during the early part of the day. In the rather warm and dry polaric air mass arrived into the scene there wasn't haze anymore. In the backside of the photographer there was arriving cumulus clouds typical of the air mass.

The minimum temperature of the day was measured therefore only just before midnight in the evening.
